Homemade Caesar salad with chicken

100 years of Caesar Salad for Independence Day 2024

As we celebrate the centenary of the Caesar salad, it’s the perfect time to dwell on the origins and evolution of this beloved dish. Not everyone knows that, born 100 years ago. Founded in 1924, the Caesar salad grew from a simple creation to become a global culinary icon, prized for its distinctive combination of flavors and textures.

Caesar Salad: History in brief

Caesar salad was created by Caesar Cardini, an Italian immigrant and restaurateur, in his restaurant in Tijuana, Mexico. Legend has it that on the weekend of July 4, 1924, Cardini was short of supplies and so with a touch of creativity and ingenuity, he assembled a salad using the ingredients he had available: romaine lettuce (or iceberg), garlic, croutons, parmesan cheese flakes, hard-boiled eggs, olive oil and Worcestershire sauce.

There was no chicken in it!

So originally the initial recipe of the Ceasar Salad did not include chicken. With chicken, many have begun to add other ingredients such as fish, anchovies to the dressing, or dried fruit to give some extra crunch notes or embellish the salad. In addition, originally, the salad was prepared directly at the table, with Cardini involving customers in the preparation, making the culinary experience interactive and memorable. The simplicity and freshness of the ingredients, combined with the spectacular preparation, contributed to the rapid popularity of the dish!
