Cantina Villa Bogdano 1880 celebrates 30 years of Organic

Lison di Portogruaro March 2023Villa Bogdano is one of the first wineries in Italy to have adopted the green choice of organic viticulture, committed in Lison to the protection of a truly viticultural heritage with no less than 18 hectares of historic vineyards.

Always committed to protecting the biodiversity of its birthplace, Villa Bogdano 1880 is preparing to celebrate a particularly important anniversary this year: its first thirty years of organic conversion.

Villa Bogdano – The old cellar estate

Today more than yesterday, organic cultivation represents a great additional value in terms of safeguarding the environment and the territory in which we live, which is why three decades ago it was an innovative and pioneering choice. This restrained approach to production makes it possible to obtain both autochthonous and international wines of the highest quality, capable of exciting and sincerely telling the story of this particular territory, between Veneto and Friuli

– explains administrator and oenologist Lucio Tessari

Among the top wineries in Italy for organic viticulture

The attention to preserving the nature of the place, in addition to the green work in the vineyard and cellar, extends to the enhancement and preservation of the 13th century lowland forest.

Villa Bogdano’s mission to recover and maintain the natural historical heritage has also been applied in the vineyard: in fact, the estate has been defined as Italy’s capital of old vines thanks to its 18 hectares, in which over 100-year-old native vines are also preserved.

The project food Forest inside the estate

Villa Bogdano’s commitment goes even further, and a food forest has recently been created in collaboration with AIAB (Associazione Italiana Agricoltura Biologica). This is a biodiversity oasis of almost half a hectare to support pollinating insects and the various species of birds that frequent the farm, but which will also serve as a home to beneficial insects, natural antagonists of vine pathogens, useful in biological control.

Natura 2000 certification (an instrument of the European Union‘s policy for the conservation of biodiversity) of which this forest is a rare example, a lowland forest of fundamental importance for the microclimate of the surrounding vineyards.’

Old Vine Conference: the valorisation of over 100-year-old indigenous vines

In 2022, this philosophy took concrete form with Villa Bogdano 1880’s membership of the Old Vine Conference, the international association based in London that promotes and enhances wines made from historic vineyards around the world by placing them in a new category thanks to their unique organoleptic characteristics.

A choice expressly desired by owner Domenico Veronese, to distinguish the company nationally and internationally in the promotion of old vines

The story of Villa Bogdano 1880

Domenico Veronese and administrator Lucio Tessari are at the head of Villa Bogdano 1880 since 2016, responsible and respectful custodians. The single Estate is bordered by two rivers and this is a great strength, because over the centuries it has allowed the original characteristics of the land to be maintained and it is still a protected oasis.

In the 106 hectares of vineyards, rooted in a clay and limestone soil, low yields are favoured, with great attention paid to the protection of ancient vineyards and the enhancement of native varieties.

In addition to Tocai Friulano, there are vineyards of Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso and Malvasia has been replanted. These choices have allowed the wines of Villa Bogdano 1880 to strengthen their identity, winning awards and finding a defined space in the international market.

Since 2022 they have been members and supporters of the Old Vine Conference, an international association based in London that protects and promotes historic vineyards
